Ah, the City of Angels… my husband grew up in L.A. and still has family in the area, so we visit about twice a year. “Where should we go to eat?” is a constant question and has produced some spectacular meals. Now, I know you can go 5 star, VIP when dining in L.A. We don’t do that. Instead, we eat at places like Philippe’s.
You go to Philippe’s for one thing and one thing only: the roast beef sandwiches. Now, sure, the menu has pork dips and lamb dips. But that’s now why you go to Philippe’s. You go to order the roast beef dip. Actually, you order the double dip (a spot-on tip from our nephew). These beef sandwiches are made from choice freshly-roasted beef dipped (or double dipped) in a homemade au jus. Double dip means both the top piece of crusty French bread AND the bottom piece are dunked in the jus. (You can also order the sandwich “wet,” which is a double-dip that stays in the jus for awhile. Personally, I am not sure how one can eat a double-dip without it falling apart in your hands!).
The line is crowded, but moves quickly. We went (as you may be able to tell from my t-shirt above) before a Sunday Dodger’s game and the place was packed. Still, we were easily able to find a seat. As you can see, we did try some sides. My husband tried the split pea soup and I had the coleslaw. Both were fine, but not the reason you go to Philippe’s. You go for the beef sandwich. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back!
